Easy A

Mise en Scene

Costume: In the opening scene of Easy A we see the main character, Olive, wearing fairly normal clothes for a girl of her age. She has a pair of blue jeans and a blue top with a black jumper over the top. This costume all looks good together and does not make her stand out in anyway, it puts a stamp on her for head saying i am normal. It tells the audience there is nothing special about her and that she is just like everyone else. This could help the audience connect with her as many of them will be teenage girls who may be feeling like they are nothing special. It could give them an escape from their life (diversion) and they could live Olive's life for the hour and 32 minutes that the film runs for.

Props: In the opening scene of Easy A we see Olive holding a pile of school books before they are knock out of her hand by another student walking by. Once again this is something lots of the target audience will be able to relate to as i would guess all of the audience for Easy A will be at school or have been at school in the past. They will have had the experience of school life and will know the feeling of lugging around exercise and text books and the struggle that came with it. They could feel a bit of sympathy for her and will therefore have made an emotional connection with Olive.

Setting: The opening scene of Easy A is set on the grounds of an American high school, and also parts in a typical teenage girls bedroom. These settings are very relatable for the target audience of Easy A ( teenage girls) as most of them will go to school and have a typical teenage girl room with posters and pictures. It makes the audience enjoy the film more as it reminds them of their own life as they connect to the settings.

Easy A Analysis

Camerawork

Two Shot: In the opening scene of Easy A we see a two shot of Olive and her best friend Rhiannon having a conversation about things going on in their lives. The two shot shows to the audience that there is a relationship between the two characters. This therefore shows that the main character olive is not a loser and is 'normal'. This can be seen as unconventional for the Teen Rom-Com genre.

High Angle Shot: In the opening scene of Easy A we see a high angle shot on Olive when she is knocked to the floor. This high angle shot makes olive look weak as it is looking down on her and as a result of this it makes the audience feel sympathy for her and therefore a connection is made between the audience and Olive.

Over The Shoulder Shot: In the opening scene of Easy A we see an over the shoulder shot when the camera shows Mr Griffin talking to a student. The view is from over the shoulder of Olive and Rhiannon. This shows life from the perspective of Olive much like a POV shot and gets the audience much more involved in the film and closer to Olive as it is like they are living her life with her.

Editing

Slow/Quick Cuts: In the opening scene of Easy A we see a mixture of both Slow and Quick cuts. At the start if the scene we see one large massive cut as the camera navigates around the school site, this slows the shot right down and suggests to the audience that the school environment is very chilled for everyone at the school. Towards the end of the scene when Olive is first introduced and knocked over sending all of her papers flying, the cuts start to speed up suggesting to the audience that school, for Olive, is not as chilled as it may be for all the other students at the school and this could result in the audience start to feel sympathy for Olive, bringing them closer to the film hs they have created an emotional attachment to the main character Olive.

Foley: In the opening scene of "Easy A" we see the use of Foley for various sounds within the scene such as a skateboard, students talking and paper scrunching. All these sounds are to help the audience understand the environment in which the scene is set. It makes the scene a lot more realistic to the audience as the sound quality of post recorded sound is a lot higher than sound recorded during filming. As a result of this the sound is easier on the ears of the audience and makes it more enjoyable for them.

Shot Reverse Shot: In the opening scene of "Easy A" we see a shot reverse shot when Olive and Rhiannon are talking to their teacher Mr Griffin. This shows a relationship between them and their teacher. It seems that the relationship they have with their teacher is a good one and the audience can relate to this as everyone has/had a teacher at school that they really got along with and as a result of this relationship that the audience have made with this film they will find it more appealing.

Soundtrack

Score: In the opening scene of Easy A the use of score is present. The genre of the score in this film is pop and  I believe this is to appeal to the target audience of the film. The stereotypical preferred music of teenage girls is pop and therefore the target audience will find more pleasure in the film due to the score used.

Voice over:  In the opening scene of Easy A the use of voiceover is present. A voiceover can really help the audience get to know the film and the main character as it is usually the main character speaking. They are also usually introducing a little bit about themselves or the film. In the case of Easy A, the voiceover is done by the main character Olive and she is speaking about herself. Much like in Mean Girls a connection is built between the audience and Olive. This makes the film more enjoyable for the audience as they feel closer to the main character.

Diagetic Sound: In the opening scene of Easy A we hear diagetic sound. This soulnd makes the film mor realistic and believable for the audience. When they see someone riding a skateboard, the audience expects to hear the rolling of the wheels. It relaxes the audience as everything is how it is supposed to be.

Credits

Fonts: In the opening scene of Easy A the credits are in the SanSerif font. This is because the Teen RomCom genre is mainly light hearted and funny, these descriptions are also the connotations of san serif so therefore is just the best suiting font for the genre.

Colour: In the opening scene of Easy A the credits are in very light colours. This suggests happiness and positivity. Like i said with fonts the Teen RomCom genre is mainly light hearted and funny and these descriptions fit the connotations of light colours. It would be unconventional to use anything other than light colours.

Credit Order: In the opening scene of Easy A the order of the credits go from most important to least important. For example, the first credits to come up on the screen is the Production Company who had the largest input into the making of the film and the last credits go the individual jobs who were as crucial in the production of the film such as the make up artist.
