Types of Music Videos
1. Performance
The first type of music video is performance. This is where the artist/ band feature in the video performing their song. Performance music videos are generally prefered by rock bands as it allows them to showcase their musical ability, you would usually see many close ups of the band/artist's instruments such as guitars, drums and microphones. An example of this would be RUN-DMC's Walk This Way as the whole video is of both RUN-DMC and Aerosmith performing the song.
2. Narrative
The second type of music video is narrative. In this type of music video a story is told throughout with the song being played over the top. Sometimes the Band/Artist will use actors to feature in the narrative but will still be shown at some point in the video. An example of this would be Daniel Powter's Bad Day which tells a story of two people who do not meet however communicate through a piece of street art they add to everyday.
3. Conceptual
The third type of music video is Conceptual. In this type of music video one idea is focused on for the duration of the video. These types of videos are quite unusual and generally use a particular editing technique. An example of this would be Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know as it focused on Gotye slowly fading into the wall behind him as, using editing techniques, he is painted the same colour camouflaging him.
4. Hybrid
The fourth type of music video is Hybrid. This sort of music video clearly mixes two or more of the other 3 already established video types. These are not as common as the other three however still count as a type of music video . An example of this would be The White Stripes' Button to Button as it can be clearly seen as a mixture of both Conceptual and Performance.
