Audience Feedback
For my music video my group and I wanted to gain a better understanding of what our audience wanted or expected to see in a music video of our particular genre ( indie/rock). To do this Ryan and I created an online questionnaire using a website called surveymonkey for our target audience, which we believed was the niche demographic of teenagers aged 13-18, to filled out. To help get more responses I emailed my media teacher Mr. Gooda the link to the survey for him to give to some of his classes down at the highschool. Overall we received 30 responses which we could use to create ideas for our music video but also challenge the expected conventions which our target audience maybe be looking for.

Analysis - by Ryan Nugent
Question 1
Question 1 for our audience was to gauge what genre our song choice was and from the results we got a landslide victory for indie rock. We agree with what our audience has chosen for its genre and we will solely be focusing on the indie rock genre

Question 2
For question 2 we asked why they chose their answer for question 1. We got some great responses for this with "Unique" appearing a lot within the responses. The responses are also saying it has a nice balance between the harshness of rock but also the calmness of indie with joins the 2 genres together to make this song an indie rock. 1 answer in particular goes into detail about why it is not the other genres by stating that "it isn't as bubbly as pop, it isn't as raw as country." This suggests it has elements of this genre but not enough to make it significant. I agree with this response as it also gives us a clear idea of what genres we should take ideas from but also distance our self from it at the same time.
Question 3
For question 3 we asked our audience what 3 words would they choose to describe the song our choice. After reviewing the list of the words they have chosen, 3 of the most popular words appear to be energetic, loud and upbeat. There 3 words also link up with what I personally thought of the song as well and it shows that the audience and I have the same idea about the song choice and what we should connote through our video. Our video therefore should appear to be energetic, loud and be upbeat along with the song and overall emphasize fun. We will do this by having the people in the video laugh with fast cuts and put a lot of fast cuts in the performance
Question 4
This was an essential question for us to ask our audience as the type of music video dictates what should be in our video overall. 2 most popular choices were narrative and performance. I personally think our music video should be a hybrid of narrative and performance and so having these 2 choices being the most popular allows me to go through with this as its what the audience wants. Since performance had a higher percentage we should consider having more performance in our video than narrative because that is what the audience wants

Question 5
For question 5 we asked our audience what type of clothing they would expect the people in our music video to wear. We got some mixed responses for this question with some suggesting casual wear while others suggesting a darker grunge wear. To keep the audience happy we can incorporate both ideas by making our narrative people wear casual clothes and look a little brighter while making our band wear darker and more grunge like clothing. This way both sides of our audience will get what they expected in the video and it will allow for a wider range of target audience.
Question 6
For question 6 we asked our audience what type of setting they expected to see in our music video and the 3 most popular out of the 6 are: road trip, campfire and forest. The road trip had a nearly 100% pick rate and so we must incorporate this setting into our music video. The forest and camp fire settings are also great choices and we can combine them in our narrative to make the characters camp in a forest. We can also use the forest setting for our band in the performance aspect of the video. We will not use the other settings as they had a very low pick rate compared to the top 3.

Question 7
For question 7 we asked whether they wanted to see bright colours or dark colours in our music video. 74% responded with dark colours and so we should make the majority of the music video dark and dim. Since the performance aspect could take up more of the video we could make their colours more dim and make the narrative more bright so the audience is able to distinguish between the narrative and performance.

Question 8
For question 8 we asked why they chose the type of brightness and colours they wanted and like question 7, they varied between why they believed what would be better. Some comments stated that the grungy feel to the song suits dim colours and on the other hand some were saying that dim colours did not fit it. Overall i believe that in our music video we need to use both in order to make our video as good as possible. We can use them to distinguish between the narrative and performance and also use them depending on the scene and time of the scene taking place.

Question 9
For question 9 we asked what sort of props they expected to see in our music video. we got many responses however instruments and cars where by far the most requested in our video. This is good as we were planning on having a performance aspect to our video so instruments were essential and since the audience wanted a road trip then a car is also essential to the scene. We completely agree with our audience on the props they have picked and will be using them in our music video.

Question 10
For Question 10 we asked what sort of characters they would expect to see within the music video. A group of friends won with a 77% pick rate however my group and I do not agree with our audience on this one. We believe a couple would suit the tone of the song better and as it also fits the lyrics a lot better. For this reason we believe that a group friends would not fit the music video and in fact a couple would be better. This is why we are going to go against our audience's expectations and form a new music video that they will not expect but will change their mind on what characters the thought should be in a music video.
