Chelsea Dagger

- The Fratellis

Brief Introduction

Chelsea Dagger is an indie rock track by the Scottish band The Fratellis. The song was released as the second single from the band's debut album Costello Music in 2006. The music video to Chelsea Dagger is a mixture of Performance and Conceptual. The main idea of the music video is of a band (The Fratellis) performing in a burlesque house. This has a very conventional performance section of the music video which will be very useful to analyse for my own piece.

ANALYSIS

Mise En Scene

In music video for 'Chelsea Dagger' there are many examples of mise en scene elements which all effect the audience. We see High key and Low key lighting used effectively throughout the music video to highlight the importance of all the band members. This is done by placing high key lighting on each band member and cutting all the lights in the rest of the room, this results in there only being light on the band members, they therefore stand out in the shot which connotes importance. Another element of mise en scene used in this music video is props. Much like in many of the other music videos I have analysed  the main props used are instruments such as guitars and drum sets. When the artists are shown playing these instruments the audience connotes that they are skillful and this impresses them. As well as Lighting and Props, Blocking is also used in the music video. Each band member is placed in there own space on the screen one to the left one to the right and one in the middle ( although the one in middle is set back slightly). This particular set up tells the audience that all band members are equal because although there is a band member placed in the centre they are set back from the other two which doesn't highlight him. By showing the band member are equal, it shows they are more about the music and not the fame - this is very conventional within the Indie rock genre.

Camerawork

In the music video to 'Chelsea Dagger' there are many elements of camerawork present which have an effect on the audience. We see a Close up used when the band are performing
